Feelin High Like I'm Tryin' To Leave the Ozone

MED is a dope MC. But when I heard Push Comes To Shove I couldn't help but feel that MED didn't reach his full potential. It's a dope album, but it could've been better. But then I heard this:

Now I'm Excited.

Expansions

What's up everyone?

I've become tired of this blog being a hip-hop only blog, and would like to expand. The reason I haven't updated the blog in some time is because I don't have anything! So from now on the blog is no longer Hip-Hop only and will be expanded into a blog centered around dope music in general.

"Don't Stop The Body Rock!"

Suckas Need Bodyguards is back! (From an exhausting vacation.)

Today our topic is Mos Def. Mos Def is known for is collaboration with Black Starr, acting, and singing. While a lot of people don't like his singing very much (or at all) he is undoubtably one of the greatest MC's in hip-hop. He has also worked with many great producers, including DJ Premier and the late J Dilla.

This song, "Body Rock", features Tash (of the Alkaholiks) and Q-Tip (of A Tribe Called Quest) and is super dope. The B-Side is Talib Kweli's "Reflection" produced by Hi-Tek. You need this single in your life!

"You Now in Tune to the Master Thought"

?uestlove dropped this freestyle on a playlist he had, and it bugged me out! Black Thought is a dope MC from one of the dopest crews in music, The Legendary Roots Crew. I've had the luck to see The Roots live twice, and if you haven't seen their live show, you're missing out on an amazing performance.

This is a rip from the Stretch & Bobbito show. I have no idea what year it is, but it's dope nonetheless. If anyone has more info on this clip or even the full show, hit me up! In the meantime, just vibe to this dope freestyle.

"It's All Good"

Jay Dee, a.k.a J Dilla, is a beast. He has been a major influence on my own music and a major influence to producers worldwide. Ever since his death in 2006, Jay has blown up immensely and still has posthumous albums being released. His extremely rare "Ruff Draft" EP was re-released as well, which is incredible. And if you have a good kidney, you can still find an original copy.

During the earlier years of his career, J Dilla produced lots of remixes for people like The Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, Mos Def, Black Starr, and Common. He also produced classics like "Electric Relaxation", "The Light" and even produced Janet Jackson's "Got Till it's Gone" but was uncredited.

The song that I'm sharing with you today is a remix of Vivian Green's "Fanatic" off of her LP A Love Story. Enjoy!

Will Be Back Soon

Suckaz Need Bodyguards hasn't been updated for a while. I've been a bit busy, taking care of my mother, who recently had surgery. Send good thoughts, she needs 'em. Things have started to slow down lately, so Suckas Need Bodyguards will be back on track soon. I got some great stuff waiting to be posted!

Tomorrow this blog will be back to normal!

"I Rock The Coolest Rhymes From Here To Acapulco"

"Act A Fool" is a personal classic. Produced entirely by DJ Pooh, the album is fun to just listen to. The whole album has a sort of "messing around in the studio" vibe, especially on "I Got A Cold" where Pooh chops up Tee's coughs, sneezes and sick-beatboxing into a dope beat. The fifth track on the album, "Baggin on Moms" is just a bunch of Yo Mama jokes for two minutes. Tracks like these make this album different, but dope at the same time.

The single "Bass" reached number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart (the highest of the album) but for some reason is remixed on the album, so you can go find the single HERE via TROY Blog. The post also includes 9 other singles so check it out!

"AIDS is wack"

"The Rubbers Song" deserves it's own post. I love this song. It's a song about using contraceptives that's not incredibly cheesy or by Dr. Dre. It's actually enjoyable.

"The Rubbers Song" was featured on a compilation album called Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. The album was released as an AIDS awareness effort, and a good one. The album features people like Donald Byrd, Digable Planets, The Roots, Roy Ayers, The Roots, and the Pharcyde. This is easily my favorite track.

The song was also released as a single with The Roots' "Proceed II" on the b-side. If you have this, please hook me up! I've been hunting it down for a while now. So without further ado, The Rubbers Song.

"If They Would've Caught Me I Would've Caught my Attorney!"

The Click is a group from Vallejo, California. Only four of the people in that photo are actually members, B-Legit, D-Shot, Suga-T, and E-40. The Click released three albums from 1992 - 2001. But in 1991, The Click released this EP on tape.

This is some classic bay-area gangsta rap. The production is great, with excellent sampling. The lyrics are pretty funny too. One of the members, E-40, is responsible for a franchise of Fatburgers in Pleasant Hill California, a liquor called Cognac Landy, a book, and fourteen albums.

"I'm Out to Bomb like Vietnam"

"Wrong Side of Da Tracks" has to be one of my favorite songs of all time of any genre. Tame One and El Da Sensei kick raps about tagging and piecing while producer T-Ray flips 9th Creation's "Bubblegum". This song is the hip-hop graffiti anthem. Although many others made songs about graf, none of the songs came close to "Wrong Side of Da Tracks".

You could imagine my excitement when I found this VLS. I got the single just for "Wrong Side of Da Tracks" but was surprised when the b-side was just as good. "Flexin' Wit Da Tech (Nique)" isn't exactly popular but it really bumps. I always love Jeru vocal samples. There's even a third song on the single called "Whassup Now Muthaf*cka?" but it doesn't include the clean version. Both "Flexin' Wit Da Tech" and "Whassup Now Muthaf*cka?" come with Bonus Beats while "Wrong Side of Da Tracks" come with a full instrumental. All the beats are dope and the rhymes are superb. Tame One even won T.R.O.Y.'s Most Underrated MC Tournament. So do yourself a favor and check out this dope single.

01 - Wrong Side of Da Tracks (clean)
02 - Wrong Side of Da Tracks (dirty)
03 - Wrong Side of Da Tracks (instr)
04 - Flexin' Wit Da Tech (Nique) (clean)
05 - Flexin' Wit Da Tech (Nique) (dirty)

"World's famous Intoxicated Demons in the house!"

Welcome to Volume 1 of Suckaz Need Bodyguards's Dope Remixes collection. For the first edition of the series, I am going to spotlight one of my favorite producer groups: The Beatnuts.

Along with a dope solo career, the Beatnuts produced for some of my favorites from the 90's era. These artists include Common (then Common Sense), Kurious, Mad Skillz, Fat Joe (when he was good), and a whole lot of others. In addition to their excellent production credits, The Beatnuts remixed people from MC Lyte to Da Lench Mob. I compiled some of my favorite remixes into one folder, and am now sharing it with you. So, if you a are a long-time fan of the Nuts or just hearing about them for the first time (somehow) then you should definitely check out this compilation.

(Plus this comp features the rare "Shook Ones Pt. 1" Remix played on the Stretch & Bobbito show back in the day)

Tracklisting:
01 - Da Lench Mob - Ain't Got No Class (Beatnuts Remix)
02 - MC Lyte - Ruffneck (Beatnuts Remix)
03 - Chi Ali - Funky Lemonade (Beatnuts Remix)
04 - Naughty By Natue - It's On (Beatnuts Remix)
05 - Mobb Deep - Shook Ones Pt. 1 (Beatnuts Remix)
06 - Mos Def - Tinseltown to the Boogiedown (Beatnuts Remix)
07 - Justice System - Dedication to Bambaataa (Beatnuts Remix)

"Mystical, Musical, Might Even Confuse a Few"

Wild Pitch Records was founded in 1985 by Stu Fine. Wild Pitch started the careers of many now legendary artists, including Main Source, Gang Starr, Lord Finesse, Ultramagnetic MC's and much more. This label had incredible potential but due to bad management and awful business strategies the label folded in 1996. Many of the artists were dissatisfied with the label, and in some cases didn't even get paid for their albums and tours. Artists then began turning in material late, and due to money problems, Wild Pitch shelved many great albums. (Including a 3rd Eye record that is rumored to be floating around the internet.)

The record label had many great releases and great artists, which is reflected by this sampler mixed by DJ KENSEI in October of 1996 (month and year of my birth!) Get more information on this release (including a tracklist) on Discogs.com

"I gots the Mad Flava with a touch of that Gumbo"

The Odd Squad is a rap group. They make dope songs. They also made a dope album.

The Odd Squad is made up of three members. Devin The Dude, Jugg Mugg, and Rob Quest. Fadanuf Fa Erybody!! is their first, and only album. Released in 1994 on Rap-A-Lot Records, Fadanuf Fa Erybody!! has been acclaimed by many and has been a sought after release for years, since the album is long out of print. This album is one of my personal favorites, as Houston rap has always had a place in my heart. One of the members, Rob Quest, is blind. Rob Quest pokes fun at his disability with "I Can't See It", which is my favorite song on the album. Rob Quest also produces some of the tracks on the album.

I hope you enjoy this album as much as I do, because I really really enjoy this album.

Release info (Discogs)

"Others had their turn to flex, Jeru is up next"

Oh how I love mysterious White Label releases.

I don't have much information on this record. Discogs says the release is a "Late 1990's white label with remixes of an unknown origin." That doesn't help. At all. Soul-Sides made a post about this release last year, with the last paragraph hinting that this may be a DJ Spinna remix. This is probable because many producers and DJ's press up white labels for illegal remixes to avoid getting sued.

The B-side is a remix of Black Moon's "How Many Mc's". Both remixes have a authentic 90's feel with dope basslines. The white-label includes instrumentals, which I could not find. If you have the instrumentals, Hit me up! Also, if you have any information on this white label (who did it, what year it was released, etc.) please e-mail me or leave a comment.

So, as promised, here are the mp3s.

"I'm not a Sucka so I Don't Need a Bodyguard"

Welcome! Damn, how do I introduce a blog?

Well, for one, the title of this brand new blog is the title of a Gangstarr song. One half of Gangstarr died very recently. Guru will be missed by all and he will definitely be remembered. Because even if he's 5 foot 8 we still call him Sergeant.

RIP Guru, 1961-2010.

The purpose of this blog is to post up anything dope from the web or from my crates. These may be Singles, EPs, Mixtapes, Mixes, Radio Shows, Compilations, Remixes, or maybe just rambling from myself. I hope the in the future this blog will run well and even have a few other writers. If you want to write for this blog, email me at mail@djprimate.com. I'd love to have some help around here (I don't know a thing about running a blog.)

And one more thing before I finish the first post of Suckaz Need Bodyguards
